Sooty & Sweeps is a small, family run chimney sweeping business led by Mark McGowan. The business started out in London and has since grown to cover Kent as well. Today the team works from two bases: 218 East Barnet Road, Barnet, London, and 8 Winterstoke Crescent, Ramsgate, Kent.
With over 40 years of experience between them, the team has worked on properties of every kind, from small residential homes to larger period and historic buildings, across London and Kent.
Mark’s qualifications and accreditations
Mark is a fully accredited chimney sweep, registered with the Association of Professional Independent Chimney Sweeps (APICS), membership number 63-APICS-12, which you can verify directly on the APICS member directory.
He is also approved by:
- HETAS, the official body recognised by the UK government for the approval of biomass and solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services. HETAS approval means a sweep has been assessed against national competency standards for chimney and flue work.
- The Solid Fuel Association (SFA), the UK’s leading authority on the safe and efficient use of solid fuels.
- Gas Safe Register, for safe work on gas fires and appliances.
- Constructionline, the UK’s largest register of pre-qualified contractors, used by clients to verify a contractor’s competence, insurance and compliance before appointing them.
Between them, these accreditations cover the full range of work the team carries out: chimney sweeping, flue integrity checks and CCTV inspections, chimney pot, cowl and bird guard fitting, chimney stack repair, and stove and fireplace installation.
